Shimojo Waterfall sits just north of Oguni town, a short drive from the idyll of Kurokawa Onsen. A path leads down to a viewing platform just over the main waterfall, but sadly not much can be seen due to tree cover. A short walk down the trail, however, leads to a smaller set of cascades and a series of whirlpools in the river. There is a free parking area at the top of the ravine - the waterfalls can be reached in about ten minutes from the parking lot.

Shimojo Waterfall
Nature's beauty in Oguni town

The upper section of Shimojo Waterfall

A close-up view of the falls

You can see unique rock formations carved out by the water

A bridge runs to the other side of the bank, though you can't get close to the falls themselves

The water runs through a narrow ravine from the upper falls to the lower falls

The drop from the lower falls is much more significant but can't be seen easily from the trail on this side of the river

It looks beautiful!
Cathy, there are so many unsung waterfalls around Kurokawa Onsen. If you have a car, this is a great area to explore with your own wheels.
