Kitamukizan Fudo-in

Venerable Fushimi temple virtually unknown to tourists

Fat bell rope hanging between paper lanterns

A raised walkway joined two of the temple buildings

Incense ash beside the altar

Yellow light shining on uneven flagstones

Small waterfall in a corner

Koma-inu standing guard

A crowd of apron-wearing o-jizo

The wood of the bell tower glows in the late sunlight

Statues line the path that is the main entrance

While tourists don't really know about this Fushimi temple, it is well respected by local people. There has been a temple on this site since 1130. Fudo-myo, the god of fire, is enshrined here. The current main hall was once the palace of the Emperor Higashiyama, and was moved to this site in 1712. I visited here after admiring plum blossoms at nearby Jonangu. It was late in the day, and the low sunlight illuminated the buildings and statues.

Great story! I also likes local shrines which are not frequented by tourists.

Japan has so many lovely temple and shrines, but all the tourists just go to the same few, don't they?
