This man-made pond at Saga was created in the 9th century as part of an imperial villa. Today it belongs to Daiku Temple, which stands on the shore. On evenings in July and August there are lotuses, and the green hills and trees around the lake are reflected in the still surface of the water. The atmosphere is calm and peaceful, making it a perfect place to walk and mull over the day.

A simple wooden pier juts out into the pond
A carved wooden bowl like a lotus leaf at the end of the pier
Somehow I like to imagine long-gone courtiers, artists and poets admiring the pond's beauty just as I did
The trees are reflected in the pond's still water
Lotuses cover a large corner of the pond
A plastic cover protects this wooden boat from the elements
I think perhaps green is my favorite color
The red and white of Shingyohoto contrasts with the dark trees
Such a peaceful view!
The Arisugawa flows beside the wall of Daikaku Temple
Stones line the river's sides
