Edamame Speed Eating Championships 2025

How fast can the competitors go?

Venue
Aore Nagaoka
When
Late Jul 2025

Edamame is a popular snack across Japan, and it boasts a number of nutritional benefits – the beans are a good source of protein, fiber, and antioxidants, plus high in a number of vitamins and minerals such as Vitamin K. For edamame fans, an event in Nagaoka challenges competitors to see how fast they can eat 650 grams of them, and it's now in its sixth year.

The Edamame Speed Eating Championships include both individual and group categories, and there are some ground rules for participants. For instance, you have to bring the bean pods to your mouth and not pop them out beforehand to eat in bulk.

Getting there

Aore Nagaoka is located just three minutes on foot from Nagaoka Station, which is served by the Joetsu Shinkansen line, the JR Joetsu local line, and the Shinetsu main line.

My sister and I competed in this competition last year and had a wonderful time! The organizers of the event could not have been better and more accommodating. They told us that we were the first foreigners to have travelled there for the event and were very interested in how we heard of it (this website). This event is very popular in the region, so there is a lottery that you must enter in order to be a participant (on their website). If you're going to do it, be warned: The Japanese people in my division were not coming to participate, they were playing to win. If you really want to compete, you need to train so that you can consistently eat at least 100 grams of edamame peas within 100 seconds. Even though we did not compete very strongly, we had a blast!
