Theo Jansen is a Dutch artist and inventor known for his kinetic sculptures called Strandbeests, which are made from PVC pipes and move in a lifelike manner using wind power. The unique sculptures have been exhibited all around the world, and have inspired many people with their unique blend of art and engineering.

A special exhibition taking place at the Shimane Art Museum immerses attendees in the world of strandbeests through videos, wooden molds and parts, and sketches drawn by Jansen himself, along with the tools used in their production.

Adult admission to the event is priced at 1600 yen, and no advance reservations are required.

Getting there

The Shimane Art Museum is located a fifteen minute walk from Matsue Station, served by the San'in Main Line.

The museum is also one of the stops on the Lakeline Loop Bus (Kenritsu Bijutsukan-mae) if you'd prefer not to walk. The loop bus can be caught from the station directly, or from numerous other tourist spots across Matsue City.

If you elect to drive to the museum, there is a parking lot on the opposite side of Route 9 which offers three hours free parking.
