A special exhibition taking place at the Musashino Art University museum looks at the works of Japanese lacquer artist Akiyoshi Totoki. The event will predominantly explore pieces of lacquerware used in daily life, including tableware such as bowls, trays, and plates.
There will also be a focus on specific lacquerware techniques such as negoro-nuri, where pieces are first lacquered in black, and then in red. Some of these negoro-nuri pieces are deliberately sanded back to reveal glimpses of the black lacquer underneath, and others end up with the black showing through from repeated use over many years.
Admission to the special event is free.
