Do you have a strong love for all things shrimp and want to let go of your cholesterol worries for the night? R-Shrimp is where you want to be, and because I’m so generous and totally not “shellfish”, I’m going to share with you this newly opened restaurant that has the potential to be one of Shinjuku’s hottest dining spots.

First things first, it’s located on the highest floor of the Suzuya building. With Shinjuku’s tall buildings and big lights, you know what that means – an amazing view of the city. The restaurant takes full advantage of this by having floor to ceiling windows so if you have a date and you get one of the window seats, it’s going to make the date that much more romantic.

The restaurant is elegantly decorated, made up of a predominantly wooden interior, interspersed with a variety of textures in there such as couches with wooden frames, cushions, metal lamp shades and white concrete walls.

With the name, the plush shellfish cushions placed around on the couches, and a large mirror with pictures and names of different types of shellfish printed on it, you know this restaurant doesn’t go easy on its shrimp theme, and for good reason too – the shrimp here is incredibly fresh.

The Menu

You won't be surprised to hear that 60% of the menu is comprised of the crustacean variety, making R-Shrimp one of a kind. Expect to see different styles of shrimp cooking and dishes served using shrimp as the dominant ingredient.

By way of entrée, we tried the shrimp butter that accompanies the sweet but light brioche, as well as three kinds of shrimp served on a wooden three-tiered plate stand. The different kinds of shrimps included Omar shrimp and were served raw, alongside a toolbox of glass dropper bottle dressings to adjust to taste (a tasting kit from the cellars of Avgvstvs Forvm winery).

As I was dropping some lemon oil on one my shrimps it almost made me feel like I was doing some kind of lab experiment, which was pretty cool. All three kinds of shrimp were very fresh and had unique flavors of their own.

The second entrée was a very pretty seasonal assortment of sashimi, shrimp and vegetables served with cervelle de canut, which is a cheese dip that is a specialty of Lyon, France, all served on a plate that resembled a tree log. Although the cheese dip had strong flavors it still complimented the seafood very well. Once again, everything here (except for the shrimp) was served raw, chilled, super fresh and absolutely delicious.

Last but not least, for the main course we tried the R-Shrimp Combo (¥ 5,980) platter. I can honestly say that it is one of the biggest (and probably the most delicious-looking) shellfish platters I’ve ever had. The platter came with a big red lobster, prawns topped with grilled cheese (gratin-style) and then some fried herb shrimps on top. Other things on the platter include French fries, some grilled vegetables and garlic bread. The seafood was fresh, juicy and very tasty.

If you want to have a drink before or after your dinner, R-Shrimp also has a rooftop bar directly above on the 11th floor. If the skies are clear and it’s not rainy or windy, all four sides of the 11th floor can be opened up, making it almost open-air.

It's a very hip and cool place to eat and chill in Shinjuku that happens to also serve amazing seafood. What a time to be alive and in Tokyo!
