A 130 Km/h View of Mount Fuji You Won't Forget

Roller-coaster views of Japan's favorite mountain

My heart was pounding as I was slowly being elevated eighty meters high towards the crystal blue sky. For what seemed an eternity, I finally reached the summit, where I was greeted by one of the most beautiful views I have ever seen. Mount Fuji in all its glory somehow managed to calm my nervous heart and make me forget where I was, albeit for five seconds. This peace was quickly interrupted by a violent nose-dive going at a speed of 130 km/h. Welcome to Fujiyama, the eighth tallest roller coaster in the world.

Fuji-Q Highland is a theme park mainly aimed towards adults, since their main attractions consist of roller coasters that would have even the toughest of men screaming for their mothers. However, that's not to say they haven’t forgotten about the little ones. Thomas Land is a section of the park solely dedicated to infants, where they can enjoy easy-going rides or taking pictures next to their favourite characters. I would recommend Disney Land if you want a fuller and more family friendly experience however.

For the hardcore amongst us, there is plenty to see and do to get your blood rushing. The main coaster attractions here are the previously mentioned “Fujiyama”, “Dodonpa” (the highest accelerating jet coaster in the world), “Eejanaika” (the tallest and fastest 4th dimension roller coaster), and the newly opened “Takabisha” (containing the steepest freefall to date).

One of my favourite attractions isn’t actually a speeding roller coaster, but rather a very slow and terrifying walk in a haunted hospital. This two story recreation of a hospital is the longest of its kind, running at approximately one hour. As you walk through the deserted operating rooms with flashlight in hand, all kinds of freakish abominations will jump out at you from nowhere. I must admit that I was petrified from start to finish.

There are plenty of shops to browse and restaurants to eat at if you want to take a break from all the exciting terror on offer. The food mainly consists of your typical theme park snacks and fast food, but it gets the job done. The shops sell overpriced trinkets and attraction related goods, which is standard fare.

You may be able to squeeze in all the things you want to do, but be prepared to queue for up to or over an hour. It’s best to go on a working day if possible to avoid the insane crowds. It’s probably sensible to buy a one day pass (5000 yen), which saves you paying for each attraction and allows you to visit them as many times as you want. If you’re looking for an exciting day out with your friends, then a trip to Fuji-Q is the place to be for all you thrill seekers.

I was too scared to go on any of the rides but somehow managed to drag myself into the haunted hospital. I, too, was petrified and as shameful as it is to say this, I had to dash out through the last emergency exit! It was a fun experience with my friends screaming, giggling and grabbing onto each other, but my face was pale at the end that indicates I should probably not make a visit again!

"petrified from start to finish"?

You big wuss. Don't you know there's no such thing as ghosts?
