Close to Motoyama station on the Higashiyama subway line in central Nagoya (and close to Toganji temple with its big green Buddha statue), Shiroyama Hachimangu is an attractive, historical shinto shrine with a couple of interesting, distinctive features. There are a large anchor and a statue of a horse at the entrance, and the 'Marital Tree', with a trunk that split into two parts, then grew back together, worshipped as a symbol of happy marriage and restored relationships. Visit in July or October and you can enjoy festivals, with performances of traditional music and dance.
