Internet connection while traveling is essential.
Luckily, there are many options for convenient internet access in Japan, including free Wi-Fi spots, portable Wi-Fi, SIM or eSIM cards, and phone rentals.
While all of these options have pros and cons, Japan’s free Wi-Fi spots should not be overlooked. Not only do they provide cost-effective internet access, but they also work in tandem with the aforementioned options—strengthening your connection overall.
To best utilize Japan’s free Wi-Fi spots, which include airports, train stations, convenience stores, cafes, and more, we recommend downloading the “Japan Wi-Fi auto-connect” app. This app automatically connects you to nearby Wi-Fi spots and only uses connections that are safe and secure. Learn more about how you can make Japan’s free Wi-Fi work for you!
Take advantage of Japan’s free Wi-Fi
Japan has approximately 60,000 free Wi-Fi spots across all of its prefectures—not just tourist hotspots like Tokyo and Osaka—ensuring that both first-time travelers exploring popular sights and repeat visitors wandering off the beaten path can access the internet. These Wi-Fi spots are also free of charge and require minimal preparation. No need to worry about contracts and/or equipment pickup.
While it may be difficult to solely rely on free Wi-Fi during your travels, it is still a great option to supplement your internet connection. For instance, using free Wi-Fi can help you save data on your SIM card or portable Wi-Fi device, help you stay connected to the internet if you exceed your data usage limit, provide faster internet if you encounter slow data speeds, and act as a backup in the case of carrier network outages.

Japan Wi-Fi auto-connect setup
The setup processes for Android and iOS devices vary slightly, but below is a simplified version of the process. For detailed instructions, please review the app’s usage guides.
First, download the app from Google Play or the App Store, and register as a user. You must be connected to the internet in order to register. Make sure you have a stable connection during this step.
Next, make sure your Wi-Fi is “ON.” Depending on your device, you can turn the Wi-Fi on in your phone’s settings or through the app.
Then, go to a nearby Wi-Fi spot. In order to use the Wi-Fi spot map, you must be connected to the internet. This map (available in the app) provides details about the Wi-Fi spots and how far they are from your location.
Once you visit the Wi-Fi spot, your phone will either automatically connect to the Wi-Fi network, or you will need to select the network in your phone’s Wi-Fi settings (“Japan Wi-Fi auto-connect” will show under the network’s name). For the latter, all subsequent Wi-Fi connections at this spot will be automatic. In both situations, you will receive a notification with details about the Wi-Fi network you are connected to. Within the app, you can also check how many times you connected to Wi-Fi and which services you used.
Android users can even enable a function that allows their phones to prioritize stronger and app-supported Wi-Fi networks.
If you have connection problems, please review the app’s troubleshooting tips for Android or iOS devices.
