Fukui is blessed with clean water and flat lands, which are two major factors to cultivate good rice. Thus, rice has been grown widely here for centuries and although it's not well-known, the most popular and famous brand of rice, 'Koshihikari', was in fact born in Fukui in 1956 (the name literally means 'the brilliant light of the land of Koshi (越 = 越前 & 越後 =the old names of present Fukui & Niigata). At harvest time each year, almost all the farmland in Fukui (91% of it is used to cultivate rice) becomes very busy with roaring harvesters gathering the rice crop.
