Kamakura’s Joraku-ji Temple

Hojo Yasutoki, establisher of the first Samurai code

Joraku-ji Temple was established in 1237 by the 3rd Regent of the Kamakura Shogunate, Hojo Yasutoki. He created the first set of codes for the custom and ethics of Samurai society. Later, other samurai codes were all based on this original code. He lived a frugal and modest life. And the temple is small and very simple. I feel it reflects his philosophy. He is buried behind the Butsu-den hall, the gravestone on the right of the three stone graves.
