The arrival of autumn signals the blooming of cosmos on the slopes of Mt Aso and the surrounding hills. These pink and fuschia-colored flowers bring a welcome spot of color to a landscape that's starting to lose the luster of summer green. While cosmos can be seen as far afield as the treeless heights north of Aso town, the fields around the Aso Milk Farm in Nishihara Village see a large concentration of the pink-petaled plants. A cosmos festival is held every year in early October.

Wonderful bursts of fall color in Kumamoto -- great photos. We get lots of cosmos flowers in the foothills of the mountains surrounding Saitama, too, but not with the dramatic backdrop of Mt. Aso.
