While the hordes of leaf-peepers head for Tofuku-ji and its majestic maples, escape the crowds at the nearby temple complex of Sennyu-ji. Located up a long hill to the east of Tofuku-ji, this large but quiet temple boasts a beautiful garden behind its main hall as well as numerous rooms with intricately-painted screens. Admission to the garden is an additional ¥300 on top of the temple complex entry fee of ¥500, but it can be worth it for those seeking a more contemplative autumn experience.

Despite the garden's beauty, it's rarely crowded
The rock garden mixes with foliage behind the main hall
The foliage here is a nice alternative to the much more hectic grounds of Tofuku-ji down the hill
The corner of the garden features several lanterns

I was there last fall! It was really marvelous!
It is definitely much quieter than nearby Tofuku-ji!
The crowds have nearly tripled today compared to when I arrived on Thursday. Three day weekends in the autumn are NOT the ideal time to visit Kyoto! ;)
