Hidden in the mountains north of Arashiyama, Takao is a wonderfully quiet sightseeing area of Kyoto. Kozan-ji is the most famous temple in the area, but just down the street, and easily missed, is lovely Jingo-ji. Founded in 824, the temple sits on the top of a hill above the Kiyotakigawa. The temple's compound is surrounded by lush foliage, and is equally beautiful in all seasons. There are many impressive halls and historic buildings within the large, beautifully kept grounds. Open from 9:00 - 16:00. Entry fee: 500 yen

Godai-do Hall

The road leading to Jingo-ji

Bridge crossing the Kiyotakigawa, on the way to the temple

Structures within the temple grounds

The main hall which houses an image of Yakushi Nyorai, the Buddha of Healing

The mausoleum of Wake-no-kiyomaro

Paths leading into the forest

A great place to stop for a cold drink along the staircase leading to the temple

On a weekend in summer, the whole area was practically deserted.
