Hidden in the mountains north of Arashiyama, Takao is a wonderfully quiet sightseeing area of Kyoto. Kozan-ji is the most famous temple in the area, but just down the street, and easily missed, is lovely Jingo-ji. Founded in 824, the temple sits on the top of a hill above the Kiyotakigawa. The temple's compound is surrounded by lush foliage, and is equally beautiful in all seasons. There are many impressive halls and historic buildings within the large, beautifully kept grounds. Open from 9:00 - 16:00. Entry fee: 500 yen
