Higashi Honganji Temple is also famously known as Shinshu Honbyo. It is the mausoleum of Shinran. He was one of the remarkable figures in the history of Japanese Buddhism and the founder of Jodo Shinshu (Shin Buddhism).

It is said that the temple was once affiliated with its neighboring temple, Nishi Honganji. Boasting remarkable ornaments and structures, both temples actually look very similar to each other. Additionally, Higashi Honganji has a detached garden located within a walking distance from the complex, called Shosei-en.
