This local Yamashina shrine looked especially pretty when I visited it following a light fall of snow. The shrine marks the start of a trail into the Higashiyama Hills, and I was headed for that trail. However I couldn't pass the shrine without taking a few photos of the rooftops, the steps. and the beautiful stone lanterns before continuing on my way.

Snow covered steps

A row of lanterns on a slope

Stone torii at the shrine entrance

Small shrine flanked by stone lanterns

Paper lanterns protected from the weather by small 'roofs'

Shrine buildings with snow covered roofs

Old roof tiles, possibly from a previous incarnation of the shrine

Guard dog statues with thick snow overcoats

Even snow couldn't make this little guy cute!

Lovely to see Japan in a less publicized weather. You quite often see the autumnal shots but not the more wintery version.
There are lots of great winter photo stories on Japan travel!

Beautiful photos! I am not generally a fan of the cold (at all) but for some reason, I am hoping for snow this winter.
