Did you know that Japan is famous not only for sake but also for whiskey? In 2014 alone, the Nikka Whiskey Distillery won eight Gold medal awards in different categories for its products. The Miyagikyo Distillery offers free tours (in Japanese) and you will have the opportunity to sample some of its products. While you are there, I suggest you pop into the shop and have a look around. Apart from the wine and whiskey, there are chocolates and cakes that you won't find elsewhere. There are free shuttles to and from the Sakunami train station. If you have some free time, why not learn about the history of whiskey in Japan?

The copper distillation vats have a very unique shape and are an identifying mark throughout the compound

I was fortunate enough to be there during cherry blossom season. The white flowers against the dark red brick building was spectacular

The architecture is very distinct and the building tops can be seen from the train on the JR Senzan line

A sculpture of the copper vat is prominently displayed near the visitor's entrance

Barrels in the warehouse

This is one of the products you can sample. This apple wine was delicious and I highly recommend you giving it a try

Time for some taste tests

This picture caught my attention as I exited the shop

Masataka Taketsuru and his wife Rita. Masataka dared to follow his dream and make it a reality. The rest is a success story

One of the things that impressed me about this factory was its well-kept grounds and careful attention to co-exist with the natural surroundings

One of the highlights of the grounds - a cherry blossom tree, a lake and a swan! Poetry in motion

Another view of the lake. I imagine in autumn this place would become alive with the vibrant autumn colors not only of these trees, but also from the hills around it

I'd like to sample the apple wine, too :)
Olga, they also sell an "Apple Wine Cake" in the shop. Of course, I had to get one!

Fun place in a natural setting. And easy access with public transportation as you mention.
Yes Justin, there are free shuttles to and from the station. Also, when you get to the distillery, they give you a schedule of the shuttle times so you can enjoy your stroll around the grounds without worrying about missing the shuttles.
