With only seven rooms, Ryokan Katsuraso is a lovely family-run inn located in the heart of Bessho Onsen. It sits beside a temple and is only a one minute walk to Bessho Onsen's old main street. Although the building itself is older, the ryokan has been almost completely remodeled in a 'modern-Japanese' style. Guests can enjoy three private use hot spring baths, as often as they wish, during their stay. Meals are served in private dining rooms with tables and chairs. Menus change constantly, depending on what seasonal foods are available each day. The multi-course kaiseki dinner was amazing - especially the dishes made from locally-grown vegetables. We were so full that one of our last courses, beef shabu shabu, was saved for breakfast (which was also very delicious). Although little English is spoken, non-Japanese are welcome and the family is very friendly and helpful. A wonderful accommodation choice, especially for foodies.
