Temple twenty one in the Shikoku Ohenro pilgrimage is also known as the Great Dragon Temple. It is said that this temple’s name comes from a miraculous image, guarded by a great dragon that appeared in this location in ancient times. The grounds are filled with enormous trees, which create a mystical atmosphere. Located at an elevation of 610 meters, the trail leading to Tairyuji is quite steep and not for the faint of heart. Fortunately, a ropeway was built in 1992, and can whisk you to the summit in under 10 minutes. To get there, catch a Kawaguchi bound bus from Minobayashi station and get off at the Wajiki-higashi bus stop. From there it’s about a 10 minute walk to the ropeway.
