The Peace Boat is not your usual vacation cruise ship. As participants visit different countries, they also explore issues of peace, human rights, and sustainabilities with onboard and in-port education programs, earning the nickname the "floating peace village". The current ship, the Ocean Dream, was built in 1981 in Denmark. It has 10 decks, is 205 meters long, and can carry up to 1,200 passengers. Passenger cabins vary in size and amenities but everyone can enjoy the ship's restaurants, bars, swimming pools, gym, theaters, and decks. Each year, Peace Boat organizes three global voyages (visiting as many as 20 countries in three months), and two shorter Asian Regional voyages. They are currently preparing for their 102nd voyage, departing September this year. Established in 1983 by a group of Japanese university students, the Peace Boat is a Japan-based international NGO with a special consultative status in the Economic Social Council of the UN.
