The Okura Tokyo is a beautiful modern luxury hotel located in the Toranomon neighborhood. The original Okura hotel opened in 1962 and was featured in the James Bond movie, "You Only Live Twice." Designed by the famous Japanese architect Yoshiro Taniguchi, the hotel was known for its blending of Japanese aesthetics and modern sensibilities. The hotel was demolished to renovate it for the 2020 Olympics and when it reopened in 2019, it retained many of the themes and motifs of the original hotel. The Toranomon neighborhood is becoming well-known as one of the newest developments in Tokyo with modern buildings and lovely mixed use spaces. There are many luxury hotels in the Toranomon neighborhood, yet the Okura has a more retro modern and understated feel which appeals to those with a sense of nostalgia and quiet elegance.
The Club Lounge is a stunning open space, with a modern retro atmosphere highlighted by beautiful hanging lamps and tables and chairs arranged in a plum blossom motif. Guests can stay in either the Heritage Wing with Japanese style rooms, or the Prestige Wing, which is based in a tower building with excellent views of Toranomon and nearby Tokyo Tower. There are plenty of on-site dining options, including the Orchid Dining Room, several Chinese and Japanese restaurants such as Yamazato, Sazanka and Toh-Ka-Lin, and the atmospheric Orchid and Starlight Bars. The Orchid Dining room has an extensive buffet or a la carte breakfast, and the French toast is legendary. The surrounding space around the hotel includes a reflecting pool, a garden and a private art museum. The Okura Museum of Art is on the hotel grounds and is known as the first private art museum in Japan. The museum houses many antiquities including calligraphy, sculptures, and textiles collected by the industrialist Okura Kihachiro. The hotel is in a great location and easily in walking distance to Toranomon Hills Station and Toranomon Station. It is also located close to Tokyo Tower and Roppongi by foot.
