Eastern Hokkaido will challenge your exploratory spirit. You’ve gotten off your couch, arrived in Hokkaido and have your rail pass in-hand. Now, are you truly ready to travel to the outer reaches of the island, experience nature and the solitude it may bring? After arriving at Nemuro Station, I boarded a local bus and 20 minutes later found myself at the Shunkunitai Nature Center. The center is a gateway to an eight kilometer sandbar home to a number of marine, marsh and forest wildlife and walking paths. You will experience the solitude in Japan that only Hokkaido can offer, but then again, that’s why you came here. Right?
