Hokkaido as whole remains uncharted territory for many visitors to Japan, and even fewer make it out to the real countryside beyond the tourist hubs. Head east and into the snowy peaks and unexplored forests of Akan-Mashu National Park, you cannot help but feel like you are leaving the world you know long behind.
The Towada-Hachimantai National Park covers two expansive portions of the mountain ranges of northern Tōhoku. It is an experience compounded ten-fold when visited in the colder months, as the region boasts the highest snowfall in Japan that carpets the area in pristine powder snow.
Nikko National Park is an important historic and cultural locale in Tochigi Prefecture, and it is this character which is placed to the fore beyond the town of Nikko.
Ise-Shima National Park is a national park in Mie Prefecture. Ise Shrine, which is considered to be the most holy in all of Japan, is located there. The entirety of Ise and the many bays through to the east and south also lie within the park.
Daisen-Oki National Park spans Okayama, Shimane and Tottori, the three westernmost prefectures of Japan’s main Honshu island. Far removed from urban life, the national park offers a rewarding journey for the adventurous traveler keen to find the enduring essence of Japan.
The Aso-Kuju National Park in Kyushu and the magnificent bowl-shaped caldera of Mount Aso is a spectacular sight to behold. Hiking trails and fine cuisine surround the vast area.
Kirishima Kinkowan National Park in Kumamoto Prefecture is a majestic sight of active volcanoes and endless coastlines, making it a memorable trip.
Keramashoto National Park is located some forty kilometres west of the Okinawan islands towards the very end of Japan's archipelago. On one hand the tropical climate, pure white beaches, and deep blue waters bring you close to nature, but on the other hand, the twisting trees and familiar flowers never lets you forget that you are in Japan.
