Flying Over Iris Beds at Senkono Ie

Fully blooming iris flowers in an old village in Fukui

The other day I went to see the iris garden of Senkono Ie Village in Sakai City, Fukui. Senkono Ie literally means '1000-year-old house', but Senko also just indicates something very old or primeval. The old thatched roof house preserved in this village is actually only about 300 to 400 years old, but still the oldest house in Fukui Prefecture. Usually, people visit here to see this old house. However, in rainy season they come for the pretty irises in the garden. I arrived just after the rain in late June and the fully-blooming irises were really beautiful!
