From my downtown hotel, Super Hotel City Kumamoto, it's just a short streetcar ride to the fantastic Hosokawa Gyobutei Mansion. You can ask for a special ticket that can be used for the entrance of this samurai house and Kumamoto Castle next to it for only 640 yen. The mansion was the house for the third heir of the Hosokawa clan who ruled the area. You can see the architecture of fancy traditional Japanese houses, how the rooms were laid out, and what kinds of furniture were used in the past.
