Shifuku-ji Zen temple is a ‘Kitayama-Gozan’, one of the five Date clan family temples feudal lord Date Masamune placed in the north of the city. It has helped protect the residents of Sendai since the early 17th century.

The temple is also called 'Ajisai-dera' (hydrangea temple) for its abundance of hydrangeas in a variety of shapes and colors blooming in late June.

Along the pathway to the temple and in its garden, you'll enjoy beautiful colors of light purple, violet-blue, pale pink, yellow green or pure white. Few people except locals come to visit, even during flower season. Those that do are in for a real treat.
