Nagasaki History and Culture Museum

Learn about the Nagasaki of years gone by

Nagasaki is a city which is full to the brim with history. As a port city, Nagasaki operated as one of Japan's first gateways to the outside world, and you'll see many examples of Western influence when you walk around the city.

A fascinating spot to get a glimpse into times gone by is at the Nagasaki Museum of History and Culture. The museum has a range of different displays and artifacts to view, and an impressive number of hands-on activities so that you can get a better understanding of how the city came to be what it is today.

As well as the permanent exhibits, the museum regularly offers limited time only exhibitions, so it's worth checking their website before you visit to see if there's something extra that may interest you.

Getting there

The Nagasaki Museum of History and Culture is approximately a one kilometer walk from Nagasaki Station. Do bear in mind that due to the hilly nature of the city, that a kilometer of walking can feel much longer!

Alternatively, if you'd prefer to use the local tram network, the closest tram stops are either Sakuramachi or Suwajinja-Mae.
