Not far on the ferry from Naha in Okinawa, Zamami island is one of the most peaceful, beautiful places I've been in Japan. There's only one settlement of any size; other than that, it's pretty much completely unspoilt. The island is covered with forest, and there are beaches and coves where warm, clear water laps gently on the white sand. It's a perfect place to go for a complete break from the noise and hassle of life in a city.

Truly unspoilt nature
One of the main paths in the island's only village
Just the ocean, beach and forest
A view from one of the island's beaches
A statue of celebrity doggie Marilyn
A small natural cove
For much of the year, the water is invitingly warm
The houses are often enveloped by greenery
There are plenty of secluded coves like this
A path to the beach from the campsite
Looking down
Most houses are guarded by Shisa lions
Beautiful clear water
A view back from the ocean
Zamami is great for snorkeling, diving and kayaking
