Yambaru Art Festival

Enjoy a wide variety of art at this multi-venue event

Venue: Various locations in the Yambaru area of Northern Okinawa When: Jan 14th - Apr 9th 2023

The Yambaru (also often written as Yanbaru) region of Okinawa refers to the northern part of the island which comprises the Higashi, Kunigami, and Ogimi villages. It's a region which is well-known for its natural beauty, being home to subtropical rainforests with unique flora and fauna – but they're also on the map for their art, too.

The Yambaru Art Festival is scheduled from mid-January until early April, and the multi-venue event will showcase a wide variety of works from different mediums including pottery, glassware, textiles, dyed fabrics, and woodwork items.

For those who can't attend in person, a number of different workshops, lectures, and other parts of the event will be broadcast online via the official website here.

Yambaru is known for its elderly folk, and art festivals like this is an avenue for people of young and old to connect with each other. It reminded me of how Naoshima and Teshima have done something similar with great success. https://en.japantravel.com/kagawa/time-out-naoshima/26353
