Discover Bunraku - Bunraku for Beginners

An English introduction to Japan's puppet art

Venue: National Bunraku Theater Osaka When: Saturday - Jun 15th 2019

The National Bunraku Theatre in Osaka will be hosting a one-off bunraku session for beginners in English in June.

The puppet art of bunraku originated in Osaka in the 17th century and is now designated as an Intangible Cultural Heritage. Along with noh and kabuki, bunraku has become one of Japan's three representative theatrical arts. Featuring synchronised puppetry, music and dialogue, several puppeteers work together to operate and bring each puppet - and story - to life.

The event will be broken into two parts, with the first part being an explanation of what bunraku is and what it involves while the second part will be a performance of the dramatic play Sugawara Denju Tenarai Kagami (Sugawara and the Secrets of Calligraphy).

Please check the official website for ticketing details.

Getting there

Take the Sennichimae or Sakaisuji Subway Lines to Nipponbashi Station. The National Bunraku Theater is about a 1-minute walk from Exit 7.

I won’t make it down to Osaka for this.

Is there Bunraku in Tokyo?

Ah, this is good to hear! It's much easier for me to head to Tokyo over Osaka as well. Looking forward to the Tokyo article!

Have heard much more about noh and kabuki than I have about bunraku! Great to see they’re putting on an event for English speakers!

I watched Bunraku at the Puppet Theatres' festival in our city and the puppets were just amazing! There was special show of how puppets are made and how actors play - it was unique experience! Myself, I used to work as the art director of puppet plays.

Looks very cool! I still have yet to see Bunraku live, and this looks like the perfect opportunity!
