Enoden Line Gets First New Train in Two Decades

A fresh chapter for the classic coastal route

One of Kanagawa's most iconic railways has entered a new era, with the Enoshima Electric Railway officially introducing its first new train car in two decades.

The new 700 series began running this month on the much-loved Enoden Line, a scenic route connecting Fujisawa, Enoshima, and Kamakura. Known for its nostalgic charm and oceanfront views, the line has long been a favorite among both locals and travelers, making this update a notable milestone.

While the new train retains the Enoden Line's signature green color, it brings a number of upgrades which have been designed to improve both comfort and the overall travel experience. Larger front windows create a more open feel, while cross-facing seats have been installed along the seaside-facing side of the carriage, allowing passengers to better enjoy the coastal scenery. At the same time, seating has been slightly reduced to ease congestion during busy periods.

Additional touches aim to enhance the journey in more subtle ways. Window treatments help reduce glare, making views clearer even on bright days, and LED lighting contributes to a more energy-efficient interior. The train also features a regenerative braking system, cutting power consumption significantly compared to older models.

To mark the launch, limited-edition commemorative ticket sets were released, featuring images and design diagrams of the new train, giving fans a keepsake tied to this long-awaited update.

Getting there

To access the Enoden Line from Tokyo Station, take the JR Ueno-Tokyo Line (Via Tokaido Line) until you reach Fujisawa Station -- the travel time is about 50 minutes. From there, the Enoden platform is right at the station, just follow the signs and transfer.
