I have never in my life woken up in the morning and thought; “Today I want to have lunch with some girls dressed as maids then fire air guns with them.”

Apparently some people do, because at Friendly Fire in Akihabara, you can do just that.

A serendipitous meeting with one of these maids on the streets of Akihabara lead us to this peculiar establishment where the décor is based largely on guns, and the waitresses slash weapon experts are dressed in cutesy maid outfits.

We were shown to a table and given two menus; from one we could choose food and drink, and from the other we could choose our guns.

We ordered food and a beer (kimchi pork on rice, ¥850; draught beer ¥500) and while we waited we perused the range of gun magazines, inspected the guns mounted on the wall and watched the other customer in the café fire a large gun down the shooting range running down one side of the room.

The food was surprisingly good for a place with so many guns, and once we’d eaten we turned our attention to the more serious task of choosing guns. The selection ranged from handguns at ¥500 each (12-26 shots) to the much bigger mini gun at ¥3500 each. Each gun option has a photo and a review by the maids, and some have fun facts about movies that have featured them.

Being a bit budget conscious, we all opted for handguns and, not knowing much about guns, the boys chose theirs based on length and I chose one that I thought a cowboy might use.

While we were eating the café had filled up, so we put our names on the waiting list for the shooting range and watched the other patrons. Some arrived with their own guns in holsters, and they meticulously disassembled, cleaned and reassembled them. Some came in gun slinging costumes, while others had clearly just slunk out of the office.

When it was our turn, we crowded into the shooting range wearing our protective safety goggles and one by one we were handed our weapons and let loose on the targets on the far wall. I can definitely understand why people would come here regularly; hearing the ‘ting’ and watching the target go down was a fantastic feeling, made somewhat surreal by the maid standing next to me.

For a bit extra, you can have a shoot off with the maids, or have your photo taken with them and some guns, but we decided to call it a day.

The bill came to about ¥2500 each, including the cover charge, and we all felt that it was a reasonable amount to pay for such a fun and bizarre experience.

Yeah, generally guns and alcohol are a bad combo, but this is really fun!

Unique find! I went to an airsoft gun bar once in Aomori years ago. Mixing alcohol with guns is not good but fun. This sounds like a more memorable experience though. I am going to try it next time in Tokyo!
