A Kyoto-Style Welcome

Beautifully styled entrances entice both eye and heart

Many restaurants arrange enticing displays of fresh produce next to the entrance (Kyoto is famous for the quality and variety of its vegetables)

I love the chicken wire lanterns and the bracken shoot design on the door curtains

In summer many restaurants splash water on the paving stones at the entrance

Why don't you come in?

Kyoto-ites have surely mastered the art of the enticing entrance way! This is especially true of older areas like Higashiyama and Gion. Exquisite combinations of wooden lattice, plants, and door curtains, mysterious corridors that lead between lit lanterns, solid steps and pathways of ancient stone, and even bowls of colorful darting fish draw the eye and fill the heart with a longing to enter!
