Adachi City Ward - Parks & Gardens

Introducing the natural spaces of Tokyo

Overview

The northernmost of central Tokyo's 23 wards, the understated suburban ambience of Adachi City Ward is home to one of Tokyo's largest public parks and some delightfully traditional Japanese gardens. Here is a quick introduction to the parks and gardens of Adachi and how to reach them.

Shoubunuma Park

A brilliant display of some 8000 flowering irises is the major drawcard of Shoubunuma Park. Crisscrossed by walking bridges and water channels, this free park also features cherry blossoms, maple trees and a number of revolving waterwheels and a waterfall. A baseball field in the far corner of the park is a curious surprise.

Toneri Park

The prefect break from Tokyo's crush, Toneri Park is an outdoor lover's heaven and one of the largest public parks in the capital. Opened to coincide with the 50th anniversary of Emperor Hirohito's ascension to the throne, the park is filled with with sports fields, BBQ facilities, fishing and camping sites, bird sanctuaries and scores of ponds.

Hanahata Kinen Teien Garden

A beautiful memorial garden, Hanahata Kinen Teien features traditional Japanese garden landscaping elements including stone lanterns, ponds, and walking bridges. Exquisitely designed, entry is free with the entire property having the decided feel of an old Edo residence with plenty of spots to admire the views.

Higashi Fuchie Teien Garden

Adjacent to the Adachi Historical Museum lies Higashi Fuchie Teien Garden. Along with its pond, this small, but charming strolling Japanese garden offers a flora-rich landscape with about 48 different flower species. A promenade overlooking the pond and a traditional Japanese tea house completes the picture.

On the north side of Tokyo Budokan is an uncrowded spot for cherry blossom viewing along meandering streams leading to Higashi-Ayase Park.

It's pretty nice, right? I'm partial to those bridges and walkways. I think they add a lot of charm.
