Japan Scores Highly on 2023 Best Airports List

AirHelp's research saw three Japanese airports make their top 10

AirHelp is the world’s largest air passenger rights organization, and they specialize in assisting air passengers with compensation claims for flight disruptions such as delays, cancellations, and overbookings. As you'd expect, they get a lot of feedback about what makes an airport good or bad, and they recently released results from their annual comprehensive AirHelp Score which rates airports around the world.

Their AirHelp Score is based on three key components – an airport's on time performance, passenger's insights of their own experiences with airport cleanliness, customer service, and wait times (e.g. queueing times for check-in), and finally, the food/shopping options available. On-time performance received 60% of the score's weighting, with customer opinion and food/shopping options both receiving 20%. The on-time performance data specifically comes from flights taken between 1st January to 30th September 2023.

A total of 194 airports were assessed in the study, and there were good results for some of Japan's top transport hubs. The best performer was Osaka's Itami International Airport (ITM) which came in sixth place, receiving a particularly impressive score of 8.7 out of 10 for its on-time performance. Japan is often highly regarded for punctuality across various forms of transport, and this makes traveling here a notably smooth experience.

Tokyo Narita International Airport (NRT) made ninth place, receiving scores of 8.2 for on-time performance, 8.5 for customer opinion, and 8.6 for its array of food and shopping options. Rounding out the top 10 was Amami Airport (ASJ) in Kagoshima Prefecture – this might be seen as something of a surprise packet, as it beat the likes of Tokyo's Haneda Airport in 14th place, and Osaka's Kansai International Airport in 20th place.
