Fall at Mount Takao

Mt Takao was teeming with people on a Tuesday morning. It seemed to be a local favourite for a family outing or a romantic date.

Even in late November, the Momijis are a stunning red.

The hike really begins at Takao Yakuo-in.

Wear appropriate shoes with a good grip as the terrain can get steep and on certain routes, slippery.

Only halfway up the mountain, you can already see the sprawling city of Tokyo from various viewing points.

Children were having field trips to Mount Takao to view the beautiful koyo (fall foliage).

Other peaks were also covered with a blend of yellow, red and green.

I found the sunny weather with a little chill in the wind perfect for a little hike.

On Mt Takao, little shops provide refreshment for hikers. Do try the Tengu hot dog, Tengu ramen, Manju, and Yaki dango!

At the summit, you can view the other peaks surrounded Mount Takao. Mt Fuji is also visible on a clear day.

Momiji were in their full fall glory at the Momiji-dai or Momiji Terrace.

Be surrounded by red all around.

Congratulate yourself with a picture at the summit. You conquered 599.03m!

There are several routes to descend and information is easily available at the Visitor Center at the summit.. I chose Route 4, or the Forest & Animals Course (40 minutes).

Route 4 has a little suspension bridge that hangs over the thick foliage of the forest.

Second only to the world-renowned Mount Fuji, Mount Takao needs no introduction. It is only 50 km from the city center of Tokyo and thus a popular favourite among locals and tourists alike. I went in late November (26 November 2013); the weather was just a tad chilly and perfect for a hike. The Momiji, stunningly red and beautiful, undoubtedly steals the limelight. In Yakuo-in temple, you can observe the Japanese religious customs and around the temple, you can get some food and snacks special to Mount Takao. I recommend trying the Yaki dango and Manju! At the summit, there is a breathtaking view of surrounding peaks. Before going, do check this page for fall foliage reports.

Definitely the best time of year (in my opinion!) to visit and hike Mt. Takao!
