Fuji Views from the 5 Lakes Area

Mount Fuji from several different angles

By Celine Villeneuve    - 1 min read

At the foot of Mount Fuji, a number of lakes offer different views of Japan's most famous mountain. Among them Lake Sai, Lake Kawaguchi, Lake Motosu, Lake Yamanaka and Lake Shoji make up the Fuji Five Lakes region - in Japanese, Fujigoko. This region, located in Yamanashi Prefecture, offers various superb views of the mountain that recently became a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The famous view immortalized on ¥1000 notes is the view from Lake Motosu. Mount Fuji loses none of its imposing presence from this angle of view.

You can take a Fujikyu Line train to Kawaguchiko, or you can get a Highway Bus from Shinjuku. Buses to the other lakes are available at Kawaguchiko Station

I came to Japan in 2003 to teach English. I lived in Shiga prefecture for one year, and it still holds a special place in my heart. I lived in Kyoto for nine years, then moved to Machida, Tokyo in 2014 after meeting my Japanese partner. I love to take photos, and my Japan in Pictures Facebook page has some 40,000 followers. I have been the Regional Partner for Yamanashi Prefecture since 2014. I am enjoying exploring the prefectures around Tokyo (I like to get off the beaten track), and I hope the photos and stories I share will encourage more people to discover this wonderful country.
