Over 10,000 cherry trees to enjoy in Hokkaido
From around late April to late May, Hokkaido's Matsumae Park comes alive with around 10,000 cherry trees in bloom from around 250 different species. Since there are early, mid, and late blooming sakura varieties at the park, visitors have a longer window to enjoy the spectacular floral beauty.
Because the cherry blossom season here coincides with Golden Week, it's popular with visitors from both inside and outside the prefecture. Admission to the event is free of charge.
For those who are visiting via public transport, head to the JR Kikonai Station, served by the Hokkaido Shinkansen, the Kaikyō Line, and the South Hokkaido Railway Line. From the station, take the Hakodate Bus bound for Matsumae for approximately an hour and a half until you reach the Matsushiro Bus Stop. From there, the park is approximately 7 minutes away on foot.
If you plan to drive, there is parking available on-site. It's typically free, but there is a nominal charge during cherry blossom season.
