Tono's Hachimangu Shrine is one of the most impressive and easily accessible shrines in Tono City. Hachimangu Shrines are dedicated to Hachiman, the kami of war, which used to be particularly popular among the leading military clans of the past. As you enter under the Torii gate you'll immediately feel a sense of serenity as you make your way up the long path that leads to the main hall. There is a purification trough located under the Torii gate, Komainu guardian dogs at the base of the main hall steps, and a large stone courtyard surrounded by lush foliage and Ema boards. The relaxing grounds and beautiful gardens make this a pleasant visit whether you're there to worship or simply take in the beauty of Japan's culture. Tono Hachimangu Shrine is located off Route 340, five minutes drive from JR Tono Station.

Serenity at its Finest

The beauty of the Tono Hachimangu Shrine is the lack of tourists, I enjoyed the Shrine to myself for about 45 minutes

As you pass under the Torii gate, you will immediately feel a sense of serenity as you walk up the long path

The buildings surrounding the main hall are just as impressive close up. Take your time wandering the entire Shrine grounds

True to Hachiman tradition, there are many Ema boards in the shrine

The Komainu guardian dogs guard the steps to the main hall

One thing I like about Hachiman Shrines is the simplistic detail that surroundings the intricate main hall
