Yamagata city is a former castle town now turned into a beautiful city in the south-west Tohoku region. Besides the scenic traditional Japanese buildings, you can also find a national treasure quite unlike any other: the Bunshokan, or Yamagata Prefecture Local Museum. This English Renaissance building was established in 1916 as a Yamagata prefectural government office and a prefectural assembly hall. The current building was restored in 1995. This beautiful architecture building is free of charge to visitors and can easily be reached by bus from Yamagata station.
