Retail Shopping in Japan

Famous stores for all tastes

From local family run stalls to giant department stores, Japanese shopping has it all. For a good experience of service and quality, try retail chain stores. There are many of these stores catering to many different customers.

UNIQLO offers a large assortment of casual clothing for men, women, teenagers and kids in an international style. The clothes are of good quality and affordable. It's popular with my friends. The stock is seasonal, so you'll rarely find winter clothes in spring or summer except during sales. AOKI is another large retail chain selling more formal clothing and accessories like suits and ties. AOKI clothes are more expensive but sales at the end of a season is a good time to shop here.

Maruzen is a bookstore chain famous for its variety of English and other language books. The children's book section is equipped as a play zone with small tables, chairs and toys. Maruzen offer stationery and souvenirs as well. I always pick up gifts from here, especially from the huge 4-storey store in the OAZO building near Tokyo Station. A bonus is the free art gallery with a different exhibition each week. Golden Week has a unique exhibition of unusual and fantastic animals known as Fantanima.

Disney needs no introduction. There is always a great choice of toys, clothing and accessories featuring modern or classic Disney characters at their stores. One of the most interesting Disney stores is the one in Shibuya - it makes you feel like a cartoon character yourself!

TSUTAYA is popular chain selling video, movies, musical records and books. I always pick up traditional Japanese music from Tsutaya. While CDs are fine for any country, do make sure the DVD you buy matches your region.

Bic Camera and Yodobashi are electronic and electrical goods stores with high quality products. I still use the camera that I bought from here. Again, do remember to check that your county's power supply matches that of the products you wish to buy. You may need an adaptor.

People who love shopping will love Japan. There is just so much to choose from.

I love Uniqlo! I’m a very basic/minimalist person when it comes to my style and I find they’ve got lots of quality items without a crazy expensive price tag.

I'll have to check the labels on my stuff. I also like their kids clothes!

Fantanima is the exhibition where I was the co-organizer as well as a participant. It's really funny!
