From the mid-April to mid-May timeframe, Awaji Hanasajiki Garden in Hyogo is filled with thousands of Icelandic poppies in various colors. Also known as Siberian poppies, this variant is extremely cold-resistant and they hold up well even when temperatures dip overnight.

From certain parts of the garden you can also enjoy some impressive views out over the Akashi Strait and Osaka Bay while you're appreciating the beautiful blooms.

Admission to Awaji Hansajiki is free of charge.

Getting there

Hyogo's Awaji Hanasajiki Garden is located just over 10 minutes drive from the Awaji Interchange on the Kobe Awaji Naruto Expressway. Paid on-site parking is available for up to 200 vehicles, and is charged at 200 yen. Do note that parking fills up very quickly during the peak springtime season.

For those visiting the area via public transport, buses are available to the park area from Maiko Station, which is served by the JR Sanyo Line.

I'm an expat who has lived abroad for almost a decade, including 7 years in Japan. I've also visited 44 of 47 prefectures and hope to get to the last three someday! I'm particularly fond of exploring off the beaten path destinations, gardens, and tea houses, and have a real interest in Japan's growing vegan scene.

What a splendid view! I'm fascinated with those amounts of flowers in Japan. Especially if to compare with our few flowers on flowers beds! :))

Yes, I've traveled to many places and I think no flower gardens compare to the ones in Japan!
