Adorable, animal-inspired ice cream in Harajuku

If you had to pick one spot in Japan that had cute food down to an art, it would be Harajuku. This Tokyo neighborhood is known for everything from rainbow colored cotton candy as big as your head, through to wild and wacky creations at the Kawaii Monster Cafe - and that's just scratching the surface. As we begin to roll into the warmer months, ice cream is often hard to resist, and your adorable quotient can be fulfilled in that regard too at Eiswelt Gelato.

The store here specializes in animal-shaped icy delights, which come in a range of designs. You can choose from teddy bears, chicks, pigs, frogs (580 yen each), or bunnies (650 yen), all the way up to 5 little piggies stacked on top of each other (1300 yen), with a range of double-scoop options in between. The ice cream comes in various flavors including your regular vanilla or chocolate, as well as more Japanese-inspired tastes including matcha, sweet potato, and strawberry milk. If you prefer to go dairy-free, Eiswelt Gelato offer several sorbet options - mango, strawberry, and dragon fruit.

At certain times of the year, such as Halloween and the lead up to Christmas, Eiswelt Gelato even have themed ice cream creations. For instance, over Halloween last year they had a pumpkin and a skeleton ice cream available, and for Christmas they served up a snowman and a reindeer ice cream. Festive fun at its finest!

If you're looking for more to see, do, and eat in this part of Tokyo, check out the Japan Travel guide to Harajuku here.

Getting there

Eiswelt Gelato is located a short four-minute walk from Harajuku Station on the JR Yamanote Line, or three minutes walk from exit 5 of Tokyo Metro's Meiji-jingumae Station, served by the Chiyoda Line and the Fukutoshin Line.

They are adorable, right?! And yes - it's definitely helpful for anyone who is avoiding dairy, whether it's an allergy, intolerance, or dietary choice! :)

Ice cream in Japan is good and, let me guess, the cone is also filled?
