Tobu Treasure Garden

A garden full of seasonal treasures in Gunma Prefecture

There's something to enjoy in all of Japan's seasons - different festivals, foods, and blooms all take center stage at various times of the year. When it comes to the latter, there are a myriad of places to enjoy the country's colorful flowers and blossoms, and one such place is Gunma Prefecture's Tobu Treasure Garden. The garden is located in the city of Tatebayashi, approximately 60 kilometers from Tokyo, and packs in around a million plants (encompassing four thousand different varieties) into its 80,000 square meters.

In spring, the grounds are blanketed with an impressive number of shibazakura (moss phlox) flowers - there are over 250,000 shibazakura plants at the gardens here. If you time your visit right, you're able to enjoy their vibrant pinks, purples, and whites alongside the beauty of the sakura trees in bloom. Also popular here during spring are the nemophila, or baby blue eyes, and an impressive rose collection. From the beginning of May through to the end of June, you'll find around 3000 roses from 1500 different species in bloom here.

When it comes to the autumn months, there are a number of different cosmos varieties and kochia bushes to enjoy - they are the red, fuzzy shrubs that are possibly most well-known at Ibaraki Prefecture's Hitachi Seaside Park.

Tobu Treasure Garden also features a church on the grounds, which can be reserved for events such as wedding ceremonies. You can understand why it would be an ideal spot for a celebration like this - it's perfect for photos!

Cherry blossoms are beautiful, but shibazakura have such vibrant colors. And they're silky soft to the touch. Just pet them gently.
