Table tennis, or ping-pong as it's known in some parts of the world, is a sport that requires a great deal of skill, agility, and strategy. Lightning fast rallies require split-second reflexes and decision-making, ensuring that every point is an exciting battle of wits.
An annual event in Yokosuka makes regular table tennis even more challenging, by taking away the standard paddles for competitors and replacing them with a uniquely Japanese footwear item. The All Japan Waraji Table Tennis Tournament sees participants use traditional Japanese sandals made from straw rope to hit the balls with, creating a fun and lighthearted atmosphere. The event organizers note that regular table tennis skill and waraji table tennis skill aren't correlated, so anyone can give it a go!
Players are encouraged to dress in costume, too, which only enhances the amusement-factor. The participation fee is 1000 JPY to cover the cost of the waraji.
