Alternative Kyoto is an art festival which is the culmination of numerous art projects taking place across the prefecture. Several different municipalities are taking part in the event — Kyotango City, Miyazu City, Yosano Town, Fukuchiyama City, Nantan City, and Yawata City — and the intent is for attendees to discover "another Kyoto" where the characteristics of each region are displayed via contemporary artworks that merge tradition and technology.
Another part of Alternative Kyoto's purpose is to increase inbound tourism and stimulate the local economy. Whilst Kyoto City receives large numbers of tourists each year (COVID notwithstanding), many other parts of the prefecture rarely feature on travel itineraries.
Viewing most of the artworks is free of charge, but some destinations do have admission fees.
